Boston's Brian Michael Roff recently released his second full-length A Sweet Science; he is a good sad and lovely songwriter who plays a mess of different instruments.

When Evolution Confessed

march 02nd, 2004

let me explain. my thoughts are scattered. this piece is that.

i wanted to capture a period of time so i set up the 4-track in the living room and recorded during most free moments. you can hear the microwave beeping from the kitchen in part two. “put it all down and arrange later,” was my thought. that is what i did.

winter is painful in new england. dark and serious. but odd and beautiful at the same time. this piece is dripping with the winter chill. pipes knocking and steam pushing. it was in me, so it is on tape.

and there is a theme. the theme arrives late to the party and stays too long. all the words are true. another biography with a mask.

please let me know what you thought. be gentle.

Proof of the Pie

february 27th, 2004

here it is. proof that my piece was delivered and signed by Joshua Dumas himself. I have cropped his signature for security purposes. more on March 1st.

the piece has been recorded. lo-fi experiments that capture a month and then arranged. it is being mixed currently by me and my pal jim reynolds (he’s in my band…plays banjo and guitar). mixing is going from Tascam Porta One to Digital Performer 3. then it will be shipped off to TW Walsh for the alchemy (lead into gold…or what the pro’s call Mastering). then the play-doh dries and it will stream.

these are words for the month and years-end. i am pushing around thoughts for march 01, 2004. i will fill you in as they come and go. bought a brick of tapes this afternoon and i was reminded of the period when i first started home recording. the 4-track was like candy. the blank tapes were like pie. i wanted to have the pie again so i have decided to record the piece on my old tascam porta one (actually my mothers). and by the way does everyone like pie? what is your favorite kind? mine is lemon meringue.
